CELEBRATING MOMS!
Welcome to Joy of Spa, compliments of The Relaxation Spot.

Moms embody the spirit of nurturing. That we would honor them with our first edition of Joy of Spa is completely appropriate. Dedicated to nurturing and supporting wellness, spas provide the opportunity to give oneself up for a moment in time and just "be." Healing, soothing touch leads the way from stress and anxiety to peace and calm. Moms have understood this concept on a cellular level from before written history. Happy Mother's Day!

THANK YOUR MOTHER
In the span of minutes that feel like seconds, she can negotiate job flexibility, worry, coordinate pick-ups and drop offs, hunt ingredients for and prepare dinner, referee sticky, messy fights all while bathing a child, reviewing spelling and throwing a load in the washer.

HEALING HANDS FOR SENIORS
New research is confirming what we already know, massage can have a positive impact on senior's response to stress and anxiety. Incorporating massage consistently into a senior's life will enhance their long-term health and quality of life.

PRENATAL MASSAGE
Pregnancy or prenatal massage is specifically tailored to address the unique needs of pregnant women. There are similarities to regular massage but there are also important differences that must be addressed to accommodate pregnancy.

Urge Congress to Permanently Protect the Arctic Refuge!
Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds. It is also the most important onshore denning habitat for America's vanishing polar bears.

But this natural treasure is constantly under siege. Time and time again, the oil industry and their allies in Congress have sought to open this special place to harmful new drilling, threatening all of the wildlife that depend on it for survival.

We need to permanently protect the Arctic Refuge! Urge your Representative to support the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act (H.R. 39) to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Romance 101
Think about the one you love.
Jot down 10 reasons they make you smile. (or more if you're so inclined, there's no limit to romance!) Put each reason on a different small piece of paper and hide them in places your loved one is sure to find in their daily routine.

Want to turn it up a notch? Make it a dozen and attach each note to a hidden rose!

Again Think about the one you love.
Think about what makes them smile, think about the little things.
Do they love to take a hot bath but never take the time? Draw it for them. Be sure to add aromatherapy bath crystals. (I have lots to choose from if you need)

Do they love wine or some other beverage? Have this prepared for them near their bath. Add some fruit, cheese, snacks, cheese cake. Whatever it is that you recall making them smile.

Want to turn it up a notch? Offer to feed/pamper them during their relaxing bath. Honor them by rubbing a body polish all over their bodies ( I also have these available)

Have a hot tub? Set up a romantic soak for two. Use some of the above ideas and add your own, think indulgence and pampering. Be very attentive to their needs.

Does your loved one Love to read in a peaceful environment? Set up an area with reading lighting and extra candles, their favorite beverage reachable, some snacks, send the kids/pets off with relatives, draw a basin (or storage container) with warm water for a foot soak.

Want to turn it up a notch? Make it a Spa Foot Massage. Add essential oils to your foot soak.
If you need I have foot kits with foot soaks, foot scrubs and moisturizing foot balms.
Rub your Loved ones feet and afterwards put on fluffy socks to lock in the moisture treatment.

Making the Most of Your Massage

How to Prolong the Benefits of Bodywork
Barbara Hey (compliments of ABMP)

A massage works in wonderful ways, easing stress and pain, calming the nervous system, increasing circulation, loosening tight muscles, stimulating internal organs, and enhancing skin. The multiplicity of physiological responses sends a simple, clear message to the mind: Massage feels good. Of course, you want to hold on to that just-had-a-massage feeling -- total body relaxation, muscles relaxed and at ease, and fluid movement restored -- for as long as possible. But how long that bliss lasts depends on the state of your body.

If you're suffering from chronic pain or recovering from injury, then it may take more sessions and perhaps different modalities before optimal health is restored. If massage is part of your regular health regimen, then it's more likely the effects will endure. In other words, the effects of massage are cumulative, like any healthy habit. The more often you get a massage, the greater and longer-lasting the benefits.

Massage Frequency How often you receive massage depends on why you're seeking massage. In dealing with the general tension of everyday commutes, computer work, and time demands, a monthly massage may be enough to sustain you. On the other hand, if you're seeking massage for chronic pain, you may need regular treatments every week or two. Or if you're addressing an acute injury or dealing with high levels of stress, you may need more frequent sessions. Your situation will dictate the optimum time between treatments, and your practitioner will work with you to determine the best course of action. "You need to consider how you felt before the session and how you felt after, and then look at how long you maintain that," says Pieter Sommen, the chair of the eastern department in the Swedish Institute School of Massage Therapy in New York.

In general, experts say "regular" is preferable, but how regular depends on your situation. While daily massage would be delightful, practical considerations such as cost, time, and physical need likely determine the frequency of treatments. "It's best to maintain a schedule," says Eeris Kallil, CMT, a shiatsu instructor at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy in Colorado. "That way the body becomes conditioned and prepared for session at specific intervals."Maintenance

Whether you get a massage weekly, monthly, or just every once in a while, the following habits can maximize and extend the afterglow of treatment.

Water One bit of advice you'll hear over and over again is to drink plenty of water after a massage. Bodywork -- no matter the particular modality -- releases toxins, such as lactic acid and carbonic acid, that need to be flushed from the body. Massage also promotes circulation, increasing blood flow and oxygen and stimulating the lymphatic system, which helps rid the body of pathogens. After-massage hydration supports these functions, helping to eliminate released impurities, sooner rather than later.

Stretching Another helpful habit is stretching between massages to maintain joint mobility, prevent muscles from tightening up again, and keeping the life energy flowing. This may mean doing yoga or whatever specific or full-body stretches suggested by your practitioner. After a shiatsu session, for example, your practitioner may recommend "makko-ho" stretches, a series of six exercises designed to keep energy circulating. "This series of stretches take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes a day, but really help keep the chi flowing through the body," says Kallil.

Exercise Working out can also help maintain the benefits of massage, and this habit should be continually cultivated. However, if you're receiving massage therapy to help speed muscle strain recovery, you may need to ease up on the exercise for a while and give the body time to heal -- particularly if you're recovering from a strenuous body-pummeling training regimen. "You don't want to over-work your body," says Kallil. That is, if running is taking a toll, try something more gentle and meditative such as swimming, walking, or tai chi.

Body Awareness After a massage, respect how your body feels. If your body seems to ask for rest, give in to that demand. This may mean backing off the to-do list, taking it easy, moving slower, and perhaps doing less for a while. And don't allow yourself to get fatigued because it will undermine the effects of massage. Get sufficient sleep to allow the body to absorb the effects and regain vitality.

Diet Finally, since you've just rid the body of toxins, support the body's renewed state by adhering to a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which will continue the detoxification process. Lay off the espresso and all adrenaline-challenges for a time -- which would short-circuit relaxation anyway -- and enjoy the calm.

The benefits of massage are many, including: increasing circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, stimulating lymph flow and boosting immunity, relaxing overused or tight muscles, increasing joint mobility and range of motion, reducing recovery time after strenuous workouts or surgery, and relieving back pain and migraines, just to name a few.

After receiving a massage, clients feel rejuvenated, relaxed, and refreshed. By opting for a few lifestyle choices, you can extend these benefits and get the most out of your massage.

My Thought of the Day

Can you really help people...for a living? Or should you? Yes, I know I'm choosing now to ask this question after being in my line of work for years. However, today it just came to mind, if you're trying to make a living, is it better to do something that is strictly profitable and then in your free time volunteer, bring joy to the world and help people. Or is it better to do something that you love, that you believe helps people and the world and yet try and earn a living at it?

For those big hearted individuals this can be quite challenging, you want to help everyone, you want to touch every life and every soul. If you value your service and charge what is considered reasonable you can't reach 'everyone'. It's not fair to charge some and not others or to charge differently. And yet if you do 'give away' your service, individuals expect that everytime, it just seems to be a natural human reaction. We often don't value what we get for 'free'.

This is also stressful for the service giver trying to make a living because putting energy into 'feeling bad' in regards to your income doesn't do anyone any good.

There are a few flip sides to this. As a country we spend money on crazy things, but it seems very little (comparatively) goes into our preventitive health and wellness.

"It's estimated that more money is spent keeping a person - a body alive, the last few days... than is often spent in an entire lifetime in prevention".~The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People Dr. Stephen R. Covey

There are other countries Canada for one, where your insurance includes an allotment for massage. This allows Canadians to take steps to maintain their wellness, as this is part of a healthy lifestyle, it helps strengthen their immune system and benefits every system in the body and hopefully cuts down on overall healthcare costs. I do believe this is a great thing all around, althought it still does not teach us where to spend our money. (that is until you're in a situation where you're no longer receiving massage and you notice the difference of how you feel in your body)

I do massage in a drug and alcohol rehab center. The other day a teenage boy came in to receive a chair massage. I watched as he stood infront of me holding up a twenty dollar bill, staring at it intently. He looked up at me and my massage chair, and told me of his revelation that this was the first $20 he hadn't spent on drugs. I told him I was honored to be the recipient of that $20. Massage is so beneficial when going through recovery as well as daily life. The teenager felt very glad he'd spent his $20 on massage afterwards.

During tough times, everyones wondering what to do with investments...we are our own best investment. It's one we often miss however. Taking steps, investing in taking care of our bodies, being of sound mind and body will help us get through tough times. While many individuals are stressed, frazzled and job hunting...being stressed and frazzled doesn't portray the traits of an employee companies are eager to hire. Taking care of yourself, receiving massage can help you put your best foot forward and sail through tough times.

I may have gone off on a bit of a tangent...but my thought is till the same. Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life....but if you don't work a day...do you pay the bills? Are you creating a living or a life? If your job is profitable, but at the end of the day you can leave it behind and put your energy into your passion...which method are you helping more people? Or should I ask are you better helping people...the goal could be more...or better.

I truly believe that massage is the solution to World Peace. If everyone...everyone got a massage at least ONCE a Week the Ripple effect would be World Peace!Just think about that for a moment. If we entered countries with warm hands, hearts and massage tables/chairs instead of armed with guns and ammunition. Would we make friends instead of enemies? If our goal was love and peace instead of control and domination (just a guess, i'm not saying everyone feels this way) would the outcome be different? I had wanted to write a book about this, my vision for world peace, touching lives one body/heart at a time. This thought fills me with such peace and happiness, makes me forget my point, although I can't reach this goal of world peace while making a living from it. Maybe I start an organization an Army of Massage Therapists that takes donations for those in need of massage in areas suffering from emotional unrest...The day dream continues in my head.

Oh but I've got to run...off to massage the world :) Or at least individuals from all over the world at the rehab...Thanks for hearing my thoughts.~Cheryl

What are you putting on your lips???

Shea Butter Lip Balm . . . Vs Petroleum Jelly
by: John McDermott

Lip balm has been around for over 100 years. But it took a wrong turn right at the beginning. The inventor of lip balm, Dr. C. D. Fleet, started an unfortunate trend by using petroleum jelly in his Chap Stick lip balm, and it's only become clear in recent years just how ineffective petroleum jelly is as a lip balm. At best, since petroleum jelly isn't absorbed by the skin, it provides only a short-term fix for dry, chapped lips. And since it keeps the skin from breathing, it can — if used frequently — actually make your lips more chapped. (I've heard it said we ingest on average 8lbs of petroleum by way of lip balms!)

If you’re looking for a lip balm that can actually heal chapped lips you should consider lip balm made with shea butter. Shea butter's effect on the skin is different from that of petroleum jelly. Instead of lying inert on the surface of the lips, it is absorbed by the skin cells. Because it improves the moisture retention capacity of your lips, your lips become dry and chapped much less frequently.

Why Shea Butter Lip Balm Works
In early adulthood, all of our skin cells — including those in our lips — begin to become more porous and less elastic. If shea butter — a substance that both moisturizes the skin and restores the skin cells' elasticity — is applied to the lips, then not only are the cells hydrated, but they gradually regain their natural elasticity so that they are better able to keep moisture from escaping. Because unrefined shea butter contains both a high moisturizing fraction and an extraordinarily high healing fraction, it is a wonderful agent for revitalizing our skin cells so that they get back their moisture retention capacity.

Why Petroleum-based Lip Balm Doesn't Work
Petroleum-based lip balm doesn't pretend to fix the problem that causes dry chapped lips. Instead, it basically acts as a band-aid -- slightly moisturizing the surface of the lips and trapping the moisture there, thus temporarily making the lips less dry. But to keep your lips moist using petroleum-based lip balm, you need to frequently reapply the lip balm. Well, you might as well just lick your lips all the time -- that has the same temporary effect, it's a lot cheaper, and it doesn't run the risk that bacteria will be trapped between the greasy lip balm and the skin, causing further irritation and even infection.

Cause of Chapped Lips
Chapped lips are, of course, the result of our lips being too dry. Everyone experiences dry chapped lips at one time or another, but some of us have a severe and chronic problem. The explanation for severe and chronic dry lips is that our skin has lost its moisture retention capacity. As a consequence, our lips become easily chapped. The chapping further reduces the moisture retention capacity and this vicious circle results in the problem becoming chronic and increasingly severe. Whether you just have occasional chapping or chronic and severe chapping, shea butter lip balm is a good choice since it enhances the skin’s moisture retention properties.

...And there you have it :)
